Students Start New Tutoring Program

Calling all students who need academic support! There is a new and improved tutoring service that is being run through National Honor Society. Originally, the counselors already had a tutoring service set up; however, they just didn’t have a way of organizing tutors to students. Seniors Ava Fuchs and Max Lebofsky have decided to take on this challenge through NHS with the help of some peers. All core subjects will be tutored, including science, math, language arts, history, world language, AP subjects and more. Tutoring sessions will be held during HATs or after school, and the students and the tutors will work out a time to meet up. Some may ask, how will the NHS students handle something that not even the guidance department is able to handle, here’s how it’s going to be done…

Ava and Max are going to set up a Remind 101 for students to request tutors. The students need to provide their phone number, name and the subject that they need a tutor for. A tutor with academic excellence in the needed subject will then get notified and set up a time to meet with the student.

This is a non-profit program; no fees will be charged to the student requesting a tutor. Not only does this program offer one on one tutoring during HATs, but they also offer essay editing and teacher support. Ava Fuchs, one of the co-leaders of this program said, “this program is to take the stress off some teachers’ shoulders and be helpful in the long run to students.” NHS advisor Mrs. Lauren Gaffney said, “It was Ava’s idea to set up a peer tutoring service through NHS. I just help to make sure that students get matched up and every student is taken care of in a timely manner.” She said that this new organization method is “kind of like a dating service” since its directly through technology and matches tutors to students.

Don’t be afraid to request a tutor; if you want to relearn a subject or even just review, request a tutor! Even if you want to bump your grade up from an A to an A+, request a tutor! Since group tutoring is also offered, you can bring a friend that also needs help. The hope for this program is for more students to seek help rather than struggle through a course.
