77th Annual Golden Globes
On Jan. 5, the 77th annual Golden Globes were hosted by Ricky Gervais in Beverly Hills, California. The award show featured an illustrious list of nominees that included legends like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino.
However, the award show was not limited to returning actors, as it featured a wide variety of new nominees, from 50-year-old Paul Rudd for his show Living with Yourself, to 12-year-old Roman Griffin Davis for his work in the satirical drama JoJo Rabbit.
Among these nominees, the movie that took home the most awards was Quentin Tarantino’s comedy Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The ninth film by the director was nominated for five awards, and took home three in the Best Original Screenplay, Best Movie Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actor categories. Tarantino himself received the award for the screenplay, and Brad Pitt took home his second Golden Globe as DiCaprio’s sidekick.
The movie that was a close second to taking home the most awards was 1917 by director Sam Mendez. This WWI drama won for Best Drama and also Best Director, which was awarded to Sam Mendez himself.
Even though some movies did not receive the awards they were nominated for, there was one notable winner: Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix won best actor for his rendition as the misunderstood psychopath in the movie Joker. Although, this wasn’t Joker’s only award win, as later in the night it received the award for best score. However, Phoenix’s stood out as his win was highly anticipated by movie lovers as well as his peers.
On top of these performances and awards won by incredible actors and directors. Two actresses won for their performances. Renee Zellweger won Best Lead Actress for her incredible transformation in the acclaimed biopic Judy. Along with Zellweger, actress Laura Dern picked up her fifth Golden Globe, for her performance in the critically acclaimed Marriage Story.
Another notable actress who picked up her first award was Awkwafina for her performance in the movie Farewell. Not only did she beat out household names like Emma Thompson and Cate Blanchett, but she also picked up the movie’s only Golden Globe, as it was beat out for best foreign film by the movie Parasite.
Another important award given was the Cecil B. Demille award. This is a lifetime achievement award, given to an actor who gave outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment. This year, the award was given to legend Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks’ career features accolades such as two Oscars, and four Golden Globes. This impressive résumé proves that he was more than worthy of receiving such a prestigious award.
One award that strays away from achievements on the big screen is the Carol Burnett award. This is a lifetime achievement award given to an actor or actress with outstanding contributions to television both on and off the screen. The winner of this award this year was Ellen DeGeneres. DeGeneres has earned a multitude of awards throughout her long career and most notably has a very entertaining talk show called The Ellen Show which has been on for 17 years. However, Ellen’s influence goes further than just the screen as she is not only an openly gay woman in Hollywood, but she is also an extremely charitable philanthropist. She has played a role in helping with so many natural causes and activist movements, and was extremely deserving of this award.
