Mini-THON, a great club with an even greater cause, held their main event on Saturday, April 26.
Senior Chloe Boer, a leader of Mini-Thon, explained that “Mini-THON is a high school version of Penn State [u as wellniversity]’s THON, where all money raised goes to Four Diamonds whose main goal is to end childhood cancer.”
Allison Thompson, another leader said that they “…do this for the kids battling cancer, for the kids who battled and won and for the kids who battled but cancer won.”
Boer added, “I do know that many members join [Mini-THON] due to personal experiences… I just want to help contribute to the fight to end childhood cancer.”
At the main event, there were games like freeze dance, simon says, dodgeball, and many more. Along with games, every hour there was a line dance as well as food like Rita’s, Chick-Fil-A, and different snacks and candy. HH’s own robotics team also came and showed out to support, they even made mini-lightsabers.
You may have never heard of Mini-THON before, but you probably know of their most notable events all throughout the school year, leading up to Mini-THON’s main event. Mr. Adamucci, one of the teacher advisers stated, “The students put a tremendous amount of time and effort into MiniTHON, and there is no real offseason.”
Mini-THON usually starts off strong with the Gold Out event held at an HH football game, which was a tremendous hit this school year. Mini-THON also holds many other events like the student-favorite Stall Day at both the high school and middle school, multiple donor drives, and many more small-scale events. What brings the people’s attention to Mini-THON is their main event though, which takes months of preparation to set-up.
It all starts with a fun theme! In past years, themes have included Superheroes, Candyland, and dancing through the decades. This year, Mini-THON chose a Hollywood Red Carpet event! Mr. Adamucci stated, “In February, [the students] start gearing up for the main event! The students come up with themes, posters, flyers, etc.. They reach out for sponsors and try to promote a great cause and to have fun while doing it.” Mini-THON leaders spent time making posters, shirts, and coming up with games and activities.
Mini-THON’s main event took a total of two months and multiple lunch and learn meetings to coordinate, leading all the way up to the final Friday before the event, and the results did not disappoint.
Lots of people came to the event during community hours, and it all culminated in a big announcement that they had raised $29,109.13 this year, which is the second highest amount raised in Hatboro-Horsham history. “Unbelievable! I’m so proud of the club!” said Mr. Adamucci.
