HH’s Empower Her Club Kicks Off
As March and Women’s History Month come to a close, HH’s Empower Her Club reflects on a meaningful month — and looks ahead to continued impact beyond it. Empower Her is a fairly new club dedicated to “inspiring and giving a voice to women around the school” and “building awareness for women’s issues,” said junior club leaders Lily Hall, Camila Hernandez, and Natalie Linn. The club made its debut at the end of February with their introductory meeting on the 25th.
Empower Her Club’s Beginnings
Together, the club’s leaders wanted to create a club that would have a meaningful impact. So, after research and brainstorming, the girls came up with the idea for a club that would focus on women and the issues they face, a topic they each care deeply about. Hall, Hernandez, and Linn also brainstormed the name of their club until settling on one they felt resonated with them: “Empower Her.” The girls began working on establishing their club, working with Mrs. Goldberg as their advisor. To promote their club, they created an official Instagram page for the club to attract and inform members. Then, as mentioned, they held their first meeting, which was met with a pleasant turnout.
When asked about the importance of establishing a club dedicated and focused on empowering women, Hernandez responded, “As much as [society] moves forward, there is still a stigma around it, and we want to show that it is important to recognize our women.” Hernandez also revealed that when Hall, Linn, and herself began telling people that they were starting a club centered around uplifting women, they received a few negative comments from people which she believes only emphasizes the significance and need for the club.
Celebrating Women’s History Month
To officially kick off their presence at HH, Empower Her embraced Women’s History Month via the daily morning announcements that spotlighted a plethora of famous and influential women throughout history. Each day this month (at the time of writing this), the club’s leaders and members share stories of women who made significant contributions in various fields. Not only did the club utilize the announcements but social media as well. Each week throughout the month, the club’s leaders posted an “Empowering Woman of the Week” where they featured women like Marie Curie and Cynthia Erivo, providing details of each woman’s impact and an inspirational quote from them. These valuable initiatives were a part of their mission to build awareness and highlight the accomplishments of women who often don’t get the recognition they deserve.
Looking Ahead
As the Empower Her Club looks to its future, its leaders are hopeful in its impact. Moving on from Women’s History Month, they plan to highlight more students and teachers around the school. Additionally, they are continuing to work on exciting new ideas for club events and activities.
The Empower Her Club encourages anyone and everyone to join and support their cause.
