HH offers a variety of clubs to match student interests and hobbies. With the second semester underway, Hat Chat interviewed several clubs about their current status and spring plans.
Crumbl Cookie
Crumbl Cookie Club will be a new club available for the second semester. The leaders are seniors Mark So and Andy Guzman. “It’s an interactive club where we can connect over something as simple as a cookie,” So said. When asked how the club will work, So said, “Depending on whether you want to join a specific week that we will be hosting on, there will be a $5 buy-in to join, and you get to try all the cookies that you want.” Since they are opening a new club, So and Guzman said their first goal for the second semester is to make the club public.
Chess Club
Chess Club participates in exactly what is in their name—they play chess. Prominent members of the chess club–seniors Jake Salters and Jack Tagliaferi—gave a little insight into what normal meetings look like. “We usually run tournaments weekly, where students play with or without a timer,” Tagliaferi said. “We also give out small prizes.”
When asked what plans they have for the second semester, Tagliaferi said, “We will be hosting our annual chess games with a Chance Tournament. It is a variant that we developed where anything can happen.” Salters described it as a gamemode of chaos and that “the purpose of it is that it doesn’t really matter what your skill level is—you will equally lose regardless.” Essentially, the gamemode is played normally with standard chess rules. However, for every set of turns, a random event will affect one of the players. This built-in variable can change someone’s playstyle instantly. Tagliaferi concluded, “I think it is more fun especially for beginner players because you aren’t getting smoked instantly—everyone has an equal opportunity.”
FBLA
“FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. It is a business-oriented club, and we do some entrepreneurship and economic events,” said senior Miles Hartman, who is a co-leader of FBLA. He added, “You can say that it is a low commitment club.” When asked what plans FBLA has for the second semester, Hartman replied, “We are planning a New York Trip which may or may not happen depending on the circumstances. We also have a national FBLA driven event in Hershey for students who compete in it. It is a business-knowledge competition. We are also doing the Valentine’s rose sale.” Overall, FBLA offers students opportunities to engage in business-related events and competitions while being more involved in the HH community.
French Club
The final club that Hat Chat interviewed for this specific journal entry was the French Club. It is led by juniors Robert Rovinsky and Jack McGettigan. McGettigan said that during meetings they have “been trying to do more French this semester.” Rovinsky added on saying that, “Yeah, we’ve been learning the language through Duolingo and started a little challenge with that. We are also really into the culture, so we have done baking in the past, or we will bring French foods.” Next, when asked about any plans for the second semester, Rovinsky said that “We will be trying to host the field trip which should be a fun event.” While this planned trip is still in the works, French Club members can look forward to it.
