The Eagles Aren’t Flying

Jack's visible disappointment.

Jack’s visible disappointment.

Yesterday’s game was a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dull season. The Eagles managed to match the Chief’s firepower, and held their own in a shootout against one of the greatest offensive powerhouses of all time. However, the Bird’s performance in this game is certainly nothing to write home about. The team still lost, and there are a plethora of things that need to be fixed before they get back to their winning ways.

It’s that time of year again, when Eagles fans all over have to waste away their Sundays watching this pitiful excuse for a football team.

Following an abysmal 2020 campaign which saw the Birds go 4-11-1 and completely miss the playoffs, some delusional fans developed high expectations for the 2021 season. While a new starting quarterback and a fresh mind at head coach might breathe some life into a seemingly dead organization, there are just far too many holes that need repairing before this team can return to its winning ways.

While the first week seemed promising, with the Birds defeating the Atlanta Falcons in spectacular fashion, the next two weeks featured the Eagles football that Philly fans have grown accustomed to in recent years.

In week two, Philly put up a miserable offensive effort against the Niners. Although the opportunities presented themselves, the execution was absolutely horrible. The game could be summed up in one play, where the Eagles began in their own endzone, and Jalen Hurts threw a beautiful ball to Quez Watkin, who broke through and made it to the opposition nine yard line. Poised for a scoring opportunity, The Eagles were not able to capitalize on their field position and proceeded to go four and out. They went on to lose the game by a touchdown.

The following week saw the Eagles traveling into their nemesis’s stadium to take on the 1-1 Cowboys. The stage was set. Monday night primetime in one of the rowdiest stadiums in the country. How did the Eagles respond to such circumstances? They lost 41-21. The score doesn’t even fully put into context how terrible the Eagles played. The brilliant offensive mind of Nick Sirianni thought it would be a good idea to run the ball a total of three times. How is Miles Sanders supposed to showcase his position as the franchise back when he is only handed the ball twice? It’s absolutely infuriating as an Eagles fan to see such terrible decision making season after season.

It looks as though the Eagles are in for another rough season. They currently sit at a putrid 1-2, and are set to take on both of last season’s Super Bowl opponents in the next two weeks. The team would honestly be lucky to break the win total from last season. If the Birds are able to get five wins, I will be extremely surprised.

However, such a terrible situation does have a silver lining. In the NFL, terrible play is rewarded in the form of draft picks, and if the Eagles continue their losing ways they will have a plethora of picks awaiting them.

So as much as I would love for the Eagles to have a successful season, I am selfishly praying that we continue to play so terribly in order to continue to build for the future.

While the future may look uncertain, the NFL is extremely unpredictable, and so much could change in the coming months. Who knows-maybe this horrible team could shock the world.
