Two Students, bestowed with the opportunity and responsibility to lead half of the high school in a week-long winner take all battle. The Generals of the Red and Black team this year are Lexie Gill and Andrew Flagler for black, and Gabrielle Liott and Camryn Ryan for red. I recently had the opportunity to talk to all of our Generals and ask them a few questions about their outlook on 2020’s Red and Black week.

Black

Lexie Gill

Unity is what came to mind when I asked Lexi what Red and Black meant to her, specifically all the time spent painting throughout the week. Lexie gives props to her art captains Ben Clarke, Jane Kobylinski, and Annie Griffith for their hard work on the Black team posters. Lexie loves her captains, and has a lot of faith in her tenth graders, who she believes is a class very similar to the seniors in terms of their competitive drive. She believes her “hype man mentality” is what makes her a great general, and will lead the Mayhem to their fourth consecutive victory.

Message to Black team: “Don’t let the three peat get to your head…it’s a new year and a new team to beat.”

Message to Red team: “Your resilience will plummet once our mayhem comes running.”

Andrew Flagler

“From being a sibling who has watched what red and black was before getting to high school I knew what this week means to most kids,” Andrew’s sister Kylie graduated in 2017 and is part of the reason why Red and Black is so important. When Andrew found out he was going to be Black team General, he and Lexie started planning immediately. He believes he is the best candidate to lead half the school because of the effort he has put in for four years, and the attention he has paid the competition and the past generals. Going into the night Andrew wants a calm but confident mindset from the black team.

Message to Black team: “You need to step back and take a deep breath and relax because you can’t get yourself worked up about what is going on.”

Message to Red team: “I’m so proud of Gabby and Cam. I’m so happy to see that all of the hard work has paid off. I wish you the best of luck. To the rest of the red team, good luck, you need to focus and work hard.”

Red

Gabrielle Liott

Gabby has been coming to gym night her whole life and has seen the ups and downs of Red and Black. One of her favorite moments from Red and Black was her freshman year watching Glee perform “When Doves Cry” “It gave me chills,” said Gabby. As a general, she believes in her ability to lead by keeping everyone involved, and her ability to compete as an athlete. Speed Pyramid is Gabrielle’s favorite event to participate in because of the intensity. Throughout our conversation, Gabrielle referenced effort and competitiveness a lot, which is the attitude she believes will lead Red to their first win in three years.

Message to Black team: “Your mayhem is coming to an end.”

Message to Red team: “Give your all and be a competitor.”

Camryn Ryan

Speed Pyramid is also Cam’s favorite event “It might be the quickest, but it’s the most fun,” Cam is a captain for three high school sports, and believes that experience is what makes her a choice leader. Cam shouted out Livy Walker and Brandon Martin for their hard work as captains, she thinks the junior class could have a huge impact at gym night since they are in a lot of big events this year. A class sweep would be devastating for Cam, after three straight years of losing she is ready to turn that trend around. “It’s bittersweet… I’m upset this is my last one but I think this will be the best one.”

Message to Black team: “Good luck but at the end of the day we’re gonna win.”

Message to Red team: “Start chants early we gotta get excited because the energy is contagious.”
